Blocks on Blocks

Day 3 and 4
May 2nd  and 3rd

Every morning we spend time with Mr. Wilson, 8:00 a.m. sharp, working to figure out a game plan and assign people jobs. We also go over what our goals are and what we wish to accomplish for the day and for the entire project and future. Wednesday I spent the day working again with Liam to transfer over our seeds into appropriate planters. I also started spending time becoming the Hawken Farm Treasurer. I wrote a grant to the Geller Fund, which gave us $1200 to fund our project!
Liam and I created our own little green house to house our little planters for the time being. When we finished transplanted, we then put plastic on top of the plants to capture heat and help them grow more!
As treasurer Allie, I’ve been working to create a spreadsheet, with charts, and projected costs to manage the money we have and will have in the future. I spent the day helping Stuart Farmer and Nate Hunt building the frame for the coup and finished up making my entrance sign for the new garden.

Today, May 3rd,  I spent the day promoting and recruiting for the Hawken Farm. I brought in my baby chicks to school and they were a huge hit! I had about forty kids walk out to the garden behind the white house, where the coup will be, to come play with the chicks. I taught the students about how the chicks we have are endangered species. Due to the meat industries over reproducing the same chicken breeds in order to get as much meat as possible, the chicken species and populations have greatly declined. We also spent time socializing them, which will be beneficial in the future. I recruited and sparked a lot of interest in the community, which is one of my main goals for my project. I need to work on finding a way to organize a way for the farm to continue, which includes having consistent care for my chicks while I’m away at college! Everyone that hung out with the babies helped me name them too. The name list includes: Carl, Lucy, Tater, Tot, Amelia, Fred, Butterscotch, Crissy and Bug. All the names fit their personalities perfectly. I’m excited by how engaged and excited the students and faculty got about the farm and can’t want to plan for next year and the rest of project!
