First Few Days
For my senior project, I am volunteering at a charter school in University Circle. It is called Citizens Leadership Academy and is an innovative and exciting place to be. The doors to CLA opened last fall with 97 sixth graders, and will be fully enrolled - grades 6-8 - by the start of the 2013 school year. These first two days have been pretty hectic as the students have been preparing for their OAAs (Ohio Achievement Assessments). Thus, I have mainly worked in the front office, taking calls and creating fliers for upcoming canvasing trips around Cleveland. Also, I have had the chance to help out in the cafeteria, helping Mr. Edwards - the chef - with distributing the food and interacting with the students. Working in the cafeteria is always exciting because the students don't only get their food from Mr. Edwards, they also tell him all of their problems and drama. I guess I forgot all about the drama that takes place in middle school. Eventually, I hope to spend time in the classroom, helping the students and learning more about education in an urban charter school.
