Day 1

I am doing my senior project with Anna Garnitz and at the end of project our goal is to have a booklet about health and wellness and how to stay healthy in Cleveland.  Today we started taking our different exercise classes to gather information for the booklet. Today we took two different aerobics/dance-type classes, which were completely different. Although we planned on taking yoga this morning, by the time we set up a pass at the JCC, because the membership desk was not open when we got there, we were a few minutes late for the class so we took their Interval Aerobics class instead.  The one at the JCC was more laid back and less impact than the one at Urban Active.  Not really knowing what this class called Prime Time really was we went to it and it ended up being a class for seniors but we took it anyways (picture to the right is from this class).  It probably was not the best way to get in great shape but it was one way to have a good time with your friend while moving around.  It worked on stretching and flexibility movements more than anything, which was nice after two hard aerobics classes.  It was a lot more fun than I expected it to be because all the elderly people in the class were so cute and friendly. Many of them thanked us for coming to their class because they love seeing young faces around the room.  Then in the afternoon we met with out senior project sponsor who works in design in order to begin discussing what we wanted to accomplish in the booklet.  This step was necessary in order to decide what we wanted to include and how to lay the information out. I am very excited for the rest of the classes we are taking and the things we are doing on project.  I will report back soon.  Hope everyone is having fun on their projects!

  1. In response to Lizzie Arnoff’s post about day 1, I love the whole idea of creating a booklet about health and wellness and how to stay healthy in Cleveland. I think its great to raise awareness and let people know what we have to offer and how they can stay in shape in the neighborhood. Also, I love that you and Anna Garnitz were able to take classes and interact with the elderly people! That means so much to them and seeing a young face in the class can be inspiring for them to keep up their good work. It’s great that you are accommodating your schedule as well, seeing that you expected to be doing one thing but ended up doing another. I think the main problem with people and working out is that they like routine and having specific schedules, but it’s great that you guys adapted to a different plan. I think our senior projects correlate in the way that my project is promoting healthy living by using self sufficient agriculture and that you guys are trying to promote working out. Maybe somehow we could get a program started at Hawken that was a workout class run by the kids, which was followed by gardening and getting the community together! Plus, maybe the elderly folks in the workout class want to spend the afternoon planting some flowers and drinking a nice cool glass of lemonade. ☺
